Trains keep a rollin' through the scenic
California countryside, and much of the state's history
was written on the rail. Railroads forged the original
paths of commerce and gateways to leisure in the Golden
State, transporting city slickers and other well-heeled
travelers for relaxing getaways to charming rural (and
once-rural) towns like Sonoma, Shasta, San Jose, San
Diego and dozens more. Now, these destinations are stars
of the California travel scene - thanks in large part
to the Iron Horse.
Today in California, you can ride the
rails all over the state, visit museums dedicated to
railroad history and lore, dine aboard luxurious dinner
trains, even drive your own locomotive! And trains are
still a great way to get from point A to point B in
California for a bargain (see www.amtrak.com)!
