| The
Fox, originally opened in 1930 as a stylish place to see a “moving picture,”
was restored and reopened in 1999 as a cultural venue. The Fox runs two summer
film festivals, one for families and one for young adults. It also can be leased
for special events and is popular for weddings with a Deco touch.
Also
of note is the Chinese Cultural Center, complete with a Confucian temple,
that houses cultural artifacts from China dating back 10,000 years. Its entrance
is guarded by traditional lions (“temple dogs”) that weigh ten tons each. Historic
Downtown Visalia is a must-visit for anyone after antiques and collectables. You
can take a walking tour of the district, using Visalia Tourism’s free self-guided
itinerary and map. You also can time your visit for a special event, such as the
annual Antique Button Show or one of the city’s Strolling Auctions. Climbing
Mount Whitney may be more than you’re up to, but less arduous hiking, biking
and boating are all available. If you are inclined to spectator
sports, take in a summer home game of the Visalia Oaks, the Colorado Rockies’
A team. Other special events from the annual Renaissance Fair to this year’s “Holypalooza”
may give you just the right reason to include Visalia on your Central Valley vacation.
The
Visalia Tourism division of the Visalia
Chamber of Commerce can help you plan your visit. Note the Info
Box for contact details, and ask them for a copy of their free Visitor Guide.
