The mission of the Museum is to promote a greater understanding
of contemporary art and the history of Santa Cruz County,
through its exhibitions, collections, and programs, for the
benefit of residents and visitors to Santa Cruz County.
One of the Museum's long term exhibits is the vibrant Where
the Redwoods Meet the Sea: A History of Santa Cruz County
and its People. Dedicated to the uniqueness and diversity
of Santa Cruz County and its residents, the exhibit describes
native peoples, the Mission period, early immigrants, early
industries, and more.
In
the Solari and Art Forum Galleries, the Museum displays from
12 to 15 art exhibitions annually focusing on regional and
contemporary art. The Mary and Harry Blanchard Sculpture Garden
is a new exhibition space designed to showcase outdoor sculpture
from the Museum's permanent collection. The rooftop gallery
is also an inviting space in which to view Santa Cruz and
the surrounding mountains.
A California point of interest, the Evergreen Historical
Cemetery is a California Gold Rush-era cemetery established
in 1850. Still an active cemetery, it is accessible via docent-led
tours offered by appointment and on the first Saturday of
the month at 10:00 am between April and October.
The Octagon Building was erected in 1882 as the Santa Cruz
County Hall of Records and now houses the Museum Store.
The Santa
Cruz Museum of Art & History's superb website site can
help you plan your visit; see the Info Box
for the Museum's hours and contact details.
